Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Otto Addo, has given reasons to his substitutions during Black Stars’ first match against Portugal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

During a post-match presser, Addo explained that Andre had been booked a yellow which was dangerous for the team. He labeled Andre’s change as a ‘tactical’ one.

“It was a tactical change, he had a yellow card. I was a little bit afraid that he couldn’t go into the duels how I wanted him to. So I took him off to bring in a fresh player. This was the reason,” he said.

The technical handle further refused to accept that the change caused the team 3:2 defeat. He emphasized the team lost because of certain mistakes.

“I don’t think it had a big impact because, at that moment, it was 1-1. The game was hectic, we made a few mistakes which allowed the second and third goals [to be scored]. We had to close the lines,” he added.
