Luis Suarez has said that he owes Ghanaians no apology following Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss during the round 8th knockout stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The Uruguayan said this during a presser before the Ghana Uruguay match of the last round match of group H. Many see the fixture as a revenge for Ghana but Suarez sees it as an opportunity to triumph over the Ghanaians again to help them move to the next stage of the tournament.
“I don’t need to apologize. I’d apologize if I injured a player, but in this situation, I handled the ball, I take a red card and the Ghana player missed the penalty. It’s not my fault. I didn’t miss the penalty. It’s not my responsibility.” — Suarez said.
Suarez handled the ball in his post to prevent a possible goal that was headed in by Ghana’s Dominic Adiyah 2010. He was red carded and Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty that was awarded to Ghana. Ghana lost against Uruguay and the memory keeps tearing Ghanaians down.
Twelve years down the line, the two countries meet again. Both teams need three points to qualify to the next round of the tournament.
