Toyota Ghana Company Limited (TGCL), a prominent player in the automotive industry, has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art $1 million engineering sciences training centre at the University of Ghana, Accra.

This significant milestone is the culmination of a visionary partnership forged between the university and Toyota Ghana in 2016. Spanning six expansive acres of land, the centre is strategically located at the Haatso section of the university, nestled behind the esteemed Great Hall.

Alongside the grand unveiling, TGCL presented a 33-seater Toyota Coaster bus to facilitate seamless transportation for students to and from the centre. This generous contribution aims to ensure accessibility and convenience for aspiring engineers.

Over the course of the next decade, Toyota Ghana is committed to providing $2 million worth of cutting-edge engineering equipment, fortifying the educational experience for students. In addition, a $100,000 scholarship fund will be administered to support exceptionally talented yet financially challenged students, exemplifying Toyota’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and excellence in education.

Distinguished guests at the handover ceremony included the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Justice Sophia A. B. Akuffo (retd), Chairperson of the University of Ghana Council, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of U-G, and Prof. Charles Ackah, Chairman of UG Chaplaincy Board, among others. Notably, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hisanobu Mochizuki, Managing Director of Toyota Ghana, Kohji Yanaka, and Chief Director of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Patrick Nimoh, graced the occasion with their presence.

The centre boasts a plethora of modern facilities, including a computer-aided design (CAD) room furnished with 40 computers and a cutting-edge three-dimensional (3D) printing machine for hands-on experimentation with student-designed components.

Further, three capacious lecture rooms, each capable of accommodating 250 students, feature top-tier furniture and advanced audio-visual systems, providing an optimal learning environment. Additionally, the centre houses a library, an engineering laboratory, and an in-house practical training workshop equipped with automobile simulators, test rigs, and vehicle hydraulic lifts.

Mr. Kohji Yanaka, Managing Director of Toyota Ghana, emphasized that the collaboration with the university aims to nurture talent, stimulate innovation, and cultivate a skilled workforce poised to propel the nation towards greater heights. He affirmed, “At Toyota Ghana, we believe that our responsibility extends beyond the realm of business.”

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of U-G, lauded the centre’s potential to revolutionize engineering education not only within the university but throughout the entire nation. She expressed, “This project supports my vision to create a culture that promotes research, teaching and learning, and administrative processes and extension activities driven by technology anchored in humanism.”

Prof. Amfo further extolled the partnership as an exemplar of how academic and industrial institutions can collaborate to nurture the next generation of visionary leaders and problem solvers, foreshadowing a model for future academia-industry synergies.

Japanese Ambassador Hisanobu Mochizuki commended the tireless efforts of both Toyota Ghana and the university, underscoring the profound synergy between industry and academia for mutual growth. He reiterated Japan’s unwavering commitment to Ghana’s development, affirming, “we are prepared to continue our collaboration through various institutions to support the progress of all sectors of the Ghanaian economy.”
