Ghana emerged triumphant in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) International Excellence Awards, securing all top three positions. The awards, aimed at recognizing exceptional performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), were presented at this year’s Council Meeting held in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The prestigious accolades were dominated by male students, with all three winners hailing from Ghana. Notably, St. James Seminary emerged as a powerhouse in academic excellence, clinching two of the topmost awards.

Leading the pack was Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi Marton, a former student of St. James Seminary Senior High School (SHS), now pursuing Medicine at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Marton secured the overall first position with an impressive score of 623.5512. Following closely behind were Dzandu Selorm, formerly of Labone SHS, and Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, both continuing their medical studies at KNUST and Ashesi University, respectively.

To qualify for an Excellence Award, candidates must achieve a grade A1 in at least eight subjects, including core subjects like English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health Sciences, and Integrated Science.

Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), commended the awardees for their outstanding performance, attributing their success to the dedication of Ghanaian teachers and school management. He emphasized the significance of the achievement, stating that it reflects positively on Ghana’s education system.

However, amidst the celebrations, concerns were raised about examination malpractice. Prof. Ato Essuman, Chairman of WAEC, acknowledged the persistent threat posed by malpractice and urged member countries to support efforts to eliminate it.

Expressing gratitude for the honor, Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi Marton thanked the government, GES, Ministry of Education, WAEC, and families for their unwavering support throughout their academic journey.

The consistent success of Ghanaian students at the international level underscores the country’s commitment to excellence in education and serves as a source of inspiration for future generations.
