In a recent address during a courtesy call to the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs in Bolgatanga, Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia reiterated his commitment to revolutionizing Ghana’s agricultural sector through mechanised large-scale commercial farming.

Dr Bawumia emphasized the pivotal role of technology in enhancing food production, highlighting the need for Ghana to transition into large-scale commercial farming to ensure sufficient food supply and lower prices of essential commodities. He noted the abundance of arable land and water resources in the country but stressed the necessity of applying modern technology to harness this potential effectively.

During his visit, Dr Bawumia also addressed other pressing issues, including the delayed Pwalugu multi-purpose dam project, which aims to mitigate flooding, provide irrigation, and generate electricity for the Upper East and North-East regions. Despite setbacks, he expressed confidence in the project’s eventual realization and its significant benefits for the affected communities.

Addressing concerns about small-scale mining, Dr Bawumia pledged to formalize the sector by issuing licenses to miners and providing support through initiatives like the Mineral Development Bank. He emphasized the importance of environmentally responsible mining practices and the eradication of illegal mining activities.

Acknowledging the plea for infrastructure improvement, particularly the reconstruction of the main road linking the Upper East and Upper West regions, Dr Bawumia assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to addressing such critical infrastructure needs to facilitate economic growth and ensure the safety of commuters.

The President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, commended Dr Bawumia’s focus on agriculture and urged swift action on essential infrastructure projects like road reconstruction to enhance regional connectivity and socio-economic development.

Dr Bawumia’s declaration signals a renewed government emphasis on leveraging technology and large-scale farming to propel Ghana’s agricultural sector forward, aiming to stimulate economic growth, ensure food security, and create sustainable livelihoods for farmers across the country.
