The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) of Nigeria has announced a significant move by the Federal government to prohibit the portrayal of money rituals and glamorization of vices in Nigerian films.

Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director/CEO of NFVCB, made the announcement during a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood held in Enugu State. The event, attended by movie producers, directors, actors, and industry leaders, emphasized the urgency of addressing concerning trends in Nigerian cinema.

Husseini highlighted the need for bold actions to address what he termed as an “industry emergency.” The decision to ban the depiction of money rituals and other crimes in films stems from efforts to sanitize the film industry and protect viewers, particularly young audiences, from negative influences.

The approval for the prohibition comes under the Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion, and Glamorization display in Movies, Musical Videos, and Skits Regulations 2024. This move signals a comprehensive effort to regulate content and promote positive messages in the Nigerian film industry.

In addition to addressing health concerns related to smoking depiction in movies, the NFVCB plans to undertake extensive enlightenment programs targeting secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, and faith groups. The aim is to raise awareness about the impact of film content on society and to encourage the development of creative content that aligns with positive values.

The NFVCB’s proactive stance reflects its commitment to leading the industry towards a healthier and more responsible portrayal of themes and messages in Nigerian cinema. As the regulatory body responsible for registering all film and video outlets across the country, the NFVCB continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Nigerian film industry.
