The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reported the arrest of five invigilators across exam centers in the Ashanti and Bono regions for their involvement in examination malpractice during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) 2024. The individuals were apprehended after being found in possession of pre-answered exam questions intended to be transmitted to candidates.

According to John Kapi, Director of Public Affairs for WAEC, the culprits were caught with screenshots of answered examination questions on their mobile phones, with two of them in physical possession of the papers themselves. The arrests were swiftly executed by personnel from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), following reports and monitoring efforts by WAEC’s security team comprising the Police and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

“We have had a good start to the examinations, except for the unfortunate incident involving five invigilators who were attempting to compromise the integrity of the English Language paper,” stated John Kapi during an interview with 3FM’s HOT EDITION.

Emphasizing WAEC’s commitment to maintaining the sanctity of the examinations, Kapi cautioned both students and invigilators against engaging in any activities that could undermine the credibility of the BECE. He reaffirmed that stringent measures had been put in place to prevent and detect instances of exam malpractice, warning that those found culpable would face severe consequences.

“We have put in measures to ensure there are no cases of exam malpractice, and we will not spare anyone who falls short of our standards,” Kapi asserted during a press conference held on Friday, July 5.

As investigations into the arrested invigilators continue, WAEC remains resolute in its efforts to uphold fairness and transparency throughout the BECE 2024 examination period, striving to protect the integrity of the assessment process for all candidates involved.
