A teacher at Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso, Ashanti Region, has expressed deep regret over his decision to become a teacher after a brutal attack by a student left him blind in one eye.

Ishmael Famous, who was stabbed in the left eye by a loitering student last year, says he is still traumatized and often wonders if he would have been safer in another profession.

“It’s not as if I sent him out of class. No.

We were only encouraging students outside to come in and learn,” he explained in an interview with Adom TV.

Mr. Famous recalled the terrifying moment, saying he didn’t see the fight coming.

“I was confused. All I heard were people shouting that he was going to kill me with a knife. He slashed my neck and head twice before stabbing me in the eye,” he recounted.

His colleagues quickly rushed him to the hospital, but doctors later confirmed that his left eye had been permanently damaged due to the type of cutter used in the attack.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for justice for Mr. Famous, urging the police to prosecute the student responsible. GNAT also insists that he should receive Workman’s Compensation, as he lost his eye while performing his duties as a teacher.

The incident has sparked national discussions on teacher safety and the need for stronger measures to protect educators in Ghana’s schools.
