The Ghana Education Service (GES) is mourning the loss of seven students from Lawra Senior High School (SHS) following a tragic canoe accident on the morning of Saturday, June 14, 2025.

The heartbreaking incident occurred during a routine early morning jogging exercise by 16 second-year cadet corps students. The group had ventured to the banks of the Black Volta River near Dikpe when 10 of them attempted to cross the river using a canoe. Midway through the journey, the vessel capsized, leading to a devastating loss of life.

GES has confirmed the deaths of five girls—Loise Kaati, Florence Kandera, Joyce Kuzare, Evelyn Batumatu, and Munira Abu—and two boys, Maxwell Dampuorideme and Alfred Foyi. The remaining three students aboard the canoe were rescued and are currently receiving psychological and emotional support on campus.

With the assistance of the Ghana Police Service, Lawra SHS authorities, local search teams, and the Lawra community, all seven bodies were recovered from the river. One of the deceased, a Muslim student, has already been laid to rest according to Islamic tradition. The funeral for the remaining six students is scheduled for Monday, June 16, 2025, in collaboration with their families.

“We assure the general public, especially parents and guardians, that Lawra SHS remains a safe learning environment,” GES stated. “We are taking every necessary step to strengthen safety protocols and safeguard our students.”

The Management of GES expressed deep appreciation to all those who participated in the rescue and recovery efforts, including the regional and district education directors, the Regional Minister, and the Lawra community. Their swift and tireless actions were instrumental during this time of crisis.

“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families, the Lawra SHS community, and all those affected by this terrible incident,” GES said in its statement. “May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”

This tragic event has left an indelible mark on the school and the nation. As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the affected families and ensuring the safety of all students across the country.
