This Is Why the Ahanta West MP Is Partnering with GES to Introduce the Ahanta Language in Schools

The Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, is working with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to start teaching the Ahanta language in schools in her area.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, July 2, she said many children are speaking only English, and this is making the Ahanta culture fade away. She believes teaching the Ahanta language in schools will help keep the culture and identity of the Ahanta people alive.

“We want to teach Ahanta in schools. We’ve worked with GES, Bible translators, and language experts to put the alphabets together. Some teachers have already been trained, and soon the language will be taught in schools,” she explained.

She added that she is also talking to the Minister of Education to include Ahanta in the national curriculum. “Children and even parents now prefer English, but we must remember our own language is important. We should start teaching children in their mother tongue,” she said.
