The town of Nalerigu in Ghana’s North East Region has been rocked by a horrifying act of violence. In the early hours of Saturday, July 26, unknown gunmen stormed the premises of Nalerigu Senior High School (SHS) and opened fire, killing two students in cold blood.

This brutal and senseless act has left a deep scar not only on the school community but on the entire region. The victims—whose identities are yet to be disclosed—were targeted in what many are calling one of the most traumatic attacks on an educational institution in recent memory.

In a post by 3News as seen by SIXSCRIBES.com, the school’s headmaster, Mr. Mohammed Tibila, confirmed the worst: “Yes, the students were indeed killed here.”

The attack happened within the school compound, sending waves of fear and confusion among students and staff. Many students are reportedly too afraid to attend classes, with some seeking refuge outside campus for their own safety.

While the motive for the attack remains unknown, regional security analysts point to a long-standing pattern of violent disputes in the Upper East Region, which may be spilling into neighboring areas like Nalerigu. The involvement of armed assailants in what should be a protected educational environment raises urgent questions about security gaps and the safety of students across the country.

The North East Regional Police Commander has confirmed the incident but refrained from offering details, citing the sensitive nature of the investigation. Forensic teams are currently combing the crime scene, and police are expected to issue an official statement soon.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken into custody as authorities work to notify their families and begin the painful process of investigations and mourning.
