The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the immediate suspension of the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School in the Ashanti Region, Zakaria Abdulai, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The suspension is expected to take effect pending investigations into the allegations, following an investigative report by JoyNews and journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the Minister described the matter as serious and directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend the headmaster while investigations continue.
The Minister has also requested the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the allegations.
The Ministry of Education and the GES have reiterated their commitment to protecting students and stated that sexual misconduct will not be tolerated in any educational institution in the country.
The Ministry further emphasised that teachers and school authorities have a responsibility to protect students entrusted to their care, rather than subject them to any form of abuse.
The statement, signed by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and welfare of students in schools.
The investigations are expected to establish the facts surrounding the allegations. The headmaster’s suspension is pending the outcome of the investigations, and the allegations have not yet been established as proven.
