Public sector workers in Ghana are expected to receive a 9% increase in total remuneration in 2027, followed by a 10% salary increase in 2028.
The agreement was reached between the government and organised labour after negotiations under the Public Services Joint Standing Negotiating Committee.
According to the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, the 2027 adjustment will consist of an 8% increase in base pay and an additional 1% allocation to address conditions of service.
For 2028, workers will receive a 10% increase in base pay.
Mr Ansah explained that the additional 1% allocation for 2027 is intended to address inequalities in public sector allowances and promote fairness, particularly for lower-paid and vulnerable workers.
He acknowledged that the agreement might not satisfy all workers but said it was an important step towards protecting their purchasing power.
Mr Ansah also stated that the government and organised labour would continue working together over the two-year period to address existing inequalities in public sector pay and allowances.
He emphasised the need for fairness in implementing the agreement, especially as Ghana prepares to transition from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to the proposed Independent Public Emoluments Commission (IPEC).
