3 Teacher Unions Pronounce Industrial Strike Over Dir. General’s Appointment

New Director General of the Ghana Education Service was appointed on October 19, 2022 by the President of Ghana to replace Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa. Three teacher unions – Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, have declared industrial strike at a press conference in Accra (Oct. 3) over displeasure of the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah (PhD).

Meanwhile, Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations have invited the unions involved over to find amicable solutions to the striking issue.

“It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) that the pre-tertiary education sector unions are threatening to embark on industrial action over the appointment of a new Director-General for the Ghana Education Service (GES).

  1. Given the long standing relationship between Government and the Unions, the Ministry hereby invites the Minister for Education and Leadership of the Unions concerned to a meeting in the Conference Room of the Ministry on Friday, 4* November, 2022 at 10:00 am to discuss and find amicable resolution to the impasse.
  2. By this invitation the Ministry entreats all stakeholders to exercise restraint whilst the matter is being amicably resolved.
  3. Many thanks for your usual cooperation.

Industrial strike by the teacher unions form of communication tends to be their only means to voice their concerns about safety, benefits and effective academic work in the country.
