Quality Of Secondary Education Has Improved Under Free SHS – Dr. Bawumia

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that pre-tertiary education in Ghana has drastically improved since the introduction of Free Senior High School (FSHS) Policy.

He stated irrespective of high enrollment in various high schools, performance and quality have been encouraging, compared to results of years before 2015.

“Compared to the poor performance that we saw in 2015 regarding the aggregate passes in the core subjects in WASSCE, we have 41 per cent and in 2022, the aggregate passes increased to 64 per cent,” he said as quoted by GNA.

Dr. Bawumia said this speaking at the opening session of the 56th congress of the National Union of Ghana Students at the University of Cape Coast. He debunked the claims of many Ghanaians and other educational stakeholders who have, since the introduction of FSHS called for a review of the “ineffective’ policy.

“People assume that with the expansion of access, quality will suffer, and performance will decline, and this is essentially saying that the Law of Gravity will have to be obeyed but access has expanded, and performance has improved and therefore we have defied the law of gravity”, he added, standing on his grounds.

The Vice President further hinted on other relevance of the introduction of Free SHS — enhancing gender parity at the Senior High School, and also mentioned other policies by the ruling government towards improving education. He touched on Technical and Vocational Education Training, introduction of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and free Wi-Fi in various schools and institutions.
