Azumah Nelson Turns 65: What He Achieved During His Time As A Boxer
Legendary Ghanaian Boxer, Azumah Nelson turns 65 today, July 19, 2023. He actively competed from 1979 to 2008.
During his active moments, he engaged in forty-seven (47) bouts and won thirty-nine (39) times, with most of his victories (27) coming from knockouts. He only lost six times and had two draws.
Azumah Nelson Junior remarkably held the super featherweight title two times between 1988 to 1997 having already had the WBC featherweight crown from 1984 to 1989.
The 165cm-tall boxer was a two-times world boxing champion and has since been ascribed as Africa’s Greatest Boxing Champion.
Among his numerous achievements are; Gold Medalist at 1978 Commonwealth Games; 2004 Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee; 2020 Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee, which makes him to be ranked as the 31st greatest pound for pound boxer of all time by BoxRec.
Meanwhile, the legendary boxer has said that Ghana will find it difficult to produce another boxer like himself since most of the young fighters are not ready to through as he did. He said this on his 65th birthday, responding to Akoma FM.
He said: “Anyone who wants to be like me ought to learn a lot and be disciplined…..It will take a miracle to produce another boxing legend because most of our contemporary boxers can’t go through the pain and hard work with humility and the fear of God, they don’t have it”.
