Afua Asantewaa’s Guinness World Record Sing-a-Thon Cut Short for Health Reasons

Afua Asantewaa, the journalist and former beauty queen, concluded her ambitious Guinness World Record sing-a-thon after an impressive 126 hours and 52 minutes, surpassing the previous record set in 2012. The decision to end the marathon was explained by her medical team, led by Dr. Grace Buckman, who emphasized the necessity to prioritize Afua’s health.

Dr. Buckman highlighted the toll of sleep deprivation on Afua’s body, revealing signs of mental stress. Despite the achievement, the medical team deemed it crucial for Afua to rest and recover. “There’s only a point you can go as a person. She has done so well, and we are extremely proud of her,” Dr. Buckman stated.

Awaiting official confirmation from Guinness World Record judges, Afua’s attempt unfolded over five consecutive days, starting on December 24 and concluding on December 29, 2023. The Akwaaba village witnessed an outpouring of support from Ghanaian celebrities during the marathon, with actors and musicians such as Becca, Cina Soul, Sista Afia, Kwabena Kwabena, Eno Barony, Kobi Rana, Sarkodie, and Nana Ama McBrown appearing in person to bolster her efforts.
