Organised Labour has called off the indefinite strike of Public Sector Workers, which was initiated last Friday in protest against the sale of SSNIT’s 60 percent stake in four hotels. The decision to end the strike follows SSNIT’s abrupt termination of the hotel sale process on the same day the strike began.

Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), confirmed the cessation of the strike and announced that Organised Labour had received a letter from SSNIT terminating the hotel sale. Despite calling off the strike, Dr. Baah emphasized that Organised Labour has given SSNIT a one-month ultimatum to resolve all pension-related issues.

The strike, supported by various affiliate labour unions including JUSAG, GMA, GPRTU, and several teacher unions, was marked by widespread participation. UTAG went a step further by calling for the dissolution of the SSNIT Board and the resignation of top management at the pension fund manager.

SSNIT’s decision to halt the sale came shortly after the prospective investor, Rock City Hotel, withdrew its proposal to acquire a stake in the hotels. The abrupt reversal by SSNIT reflects the intensity of the opposition and the concerns raised by Organised Labour and its affiliates regarding the implications of the sale on pension-related matters.

The strike action, which disrupted public services and garnered significant attention nationwide, underscores the pivotal role of labour unions in safeguarding workers’ interests and influencing policy decisions affecting public welfare and economic stability.
