Nairobi, Kenya – A high-profile suspect, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who confessed to murdering 42 women, has escaped from police custody, along with 12 Eritrean inmates being held for immigration violations. The escape occurred early Tuesday morning after the inmates cut through wire mesh and scaled the perimeter wall of their cell.

Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, confirmed the escape and indicated that it was facilitated by insiders within the police force. Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli announced that disciplinary action is being taken against eight officers, including station and area commanders, as preliminary investigations suggest lapses in security protocols.

The escape was discovered when breakfast was being delivered to the cell. Khalusha, 33, had been detained at the police station following a court order that extended the investigation period before formal charges were filed. He was arrested in July after 10 bodies and dismembered remains were found in plastic sacks in Nairobi’s Kware area. Khalusha allegedly admitted to killing 42 women, including his wife.

Police have cordoned off the station with crime scene tape, and senior officers are conducting an investigation. Khalusha’s lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, expressed disbelief at the escape and reiterated his client’s claims of torture and forced confession. Ndegwa last spoke to Khalusha on Friday before his court appearance.

In related developments, two suspects found with cellphones belonging to some of the deceased women are scheduled to return to court next Monday. The discovery of the bodies was initially prompted by a dream reported by a relative of a missing woman, which led to the bodies being found in a quarry. While six bodies have been identified through DNA testing, several remains remain unidentified.
