Crisis in Canada: 30 Ghanaian Scholarship Students Stranded Over Unpaid Tuition Fees

At least 30 Ghanaian students who were awarded government scholarships to pursue higher education in Canada are now facing an academic and financial crisis, as the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has failed to pay their tuition fees, jeopardizing their future.

The affected students, who gained admission into top Canadian universities such as the University of Toronto, University of Calgary, Carleton University, Durham College, York University and other top universities and colleges in Canada, were assured that their tuition and living expenses would be fully covered by the Ghanaian government through the Scholarship Secretariat.

However, despite starting their academic journeys with hope and promise, several of them are now at risk of being deregistered or barred from continuing their studies due to unpaid tuition balances.

Some of the students have already been issued warning notices by their institutions, while others face the threat of losing access to academic resources, immigration complications, or suspension from their programs.

According to reports, the students were selected through a competitive process and granted scholarships under the expectation that the Scholarship Secretariat would handle their tuition fees and related costs.

One affected student, speaking anonymously, said, “We came here with trust in our country’s promise. Now, we are emotionally drained, academically distracted, and financially stranded.”

Calls for Immediate Action

Families and advocacy groups are calling on the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and the Ministry of Education to intervene urgently to prevent these students from being removed from their programs or facing deportation.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Scholarship Secretariat regarding the reasons for the delay or when payments will be made.

The situation continues to develop, and affected students are appealing for immediate governmental support, warning that their dreams of contributing to national development through education may soon collapse if no action is taken.
