Real Madrid have confirmed that they have ended their working relationship with head coach Xabi Alonso with immediate effect.
In a statement, the club said the decision was reached by mutual consent. “Real Madrid CF announces that, following an agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his spell as first-team coach to an end,” the statement said.
Alonso was appointed in June 2025 after Carlo Ancelotti left the club to take charge of the Brazilian national team. His arrival was welcomed with high expectations.
Although the 44-year-old coach showed some encouraging signs during his tenure, he faced several challenges, especially in recent weeks. Injuries, disappointing results, and reported tension in the dressing room made his job more difficult.
His recent victory over Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final was thought to have bought him more time to steady the team. However, the club’s decision changed after their defeat to FC Barcelona in the final, leading club president Florentino Perez and the board to dismiss him.
The statement added that Xabi Alonso would always be held in high regard by Real Madrid supporters, describing him as a club legend who represents the values of the team. The club noted that Real Madrid will always be his home.
Real Madrid also expressed appreciation to Alonso and his entire backroom staff for their commitment and hard work, wishing them success in the next chapter of their careers.
Attention now turns to who will take over as manager, with Castilla coach Alvaro Arbeloa and former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp among the names previously linked with the role.
