The Accra High Court has convicted the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and his company, Akonta Mining, over illegal mining activities at the company’s concession in Samreboi in the Western Region.
During sentencing, Wontumi’s lawyers appealed to the court to be lenient, arguing that he is a first-time offender. They also told the court that he is remorseful and has accepted responsibility for his actions.
A friend of the court, Bernard Owiredu Donkor, also pleaded for mercy, describing Wontumi as a successful businessman whose companies have created jobs for many young people. He argued that any decision that could lead to the collapse of the businesses would negatively affect thousands of workers and their families.
The court has convicted Wontumi and Akonta Mining, with sentencing expected to determine the final punishment.
