Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has become the toast of Sudanese football fans after leading the national team to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory since 2012. Sudan’s memorable win over Equatorial Guinea has ignited fresh hope and pride among supporters, both at home and in the diaspora.
The achievement has drawn glowing praise from Sudanese sports journalist Ibrahim Salih, who described Appiah’s impact as extraordinary.
“After God, Kwesi Appiah has done so much for Sudan,” Salih said, commending the coach for restoring belief, discipline, and competitiveness to the national team.
Speaking after the historic victory, Kwesi Appiah expressed satisfaction with the result but stressed that Sudan’s ambitions go far beyond winning just one match.
“I am satisfied with the win, but our mission is not to win just one match. When you participate in a competition, the ambition isn’t simply to participate or to advance from the group stage. The goal is to go all the way and win the tournament,” Appiah stated.
The Ghanaian tactician also reserved special words for Sudanese fans, who passionately chanted his name during the match. He highlighted the importance of their support, especially in difficult times.
“My message to all Sudanese people is simple: pray for us and support the team. Sudanese people are scattered across Africa and the world due to the conflict, and their presence in the stadium gives the players great strength. We will fight to keep raising the flag of Sudan,” he said.
