The Black Stars of Ghana face Uruguay on Friday December 2, 2022, at 15:00GMT in what looks like a ‘do-or-die’ encounter of the final group H round of qualifying matches. Ghana have 3 points and would need a win or, possibly, a draw to qualify to the round of 16. Uruguay, on the other hand, need a must win to have a chance of making it to the knockout stage.
Ghana coach, Otto Addo, is likely to maintain the same squad that won the game against South Korea in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Inaki Williams stepping in as the top striker.
Gideon Mensah expressed injury concerns on 88th minute of the South Korea match which led to his substitution for Baba Rahman. One change that could be effected by Ghana’s technical handlers against Uruguay might be Baba Rahman replacing Gideon Mensah.
Meanwhile, Gideon Mensah said in interview with GhanaWeb after the match that he only had a mild cramp but not a serious injury which could prevent him from playing against Uruguay. Ghana Medics are yet to comment on that.
“It was just cramps. For me, it was better to go off for fresh legs to come and defend. If I wanted to be in the game and play that will be selfish and it was going to affect the team so I had to come off” — Gideon Mensah said.
Despite his strong performance against South Korea, Tariq Lamptey lost possession that led to South Korea’s first goal. Lamptey received a yellow card when the Koreans were pressing Ghana for goals. He was later substituted for Denis Odoi. Possibly, he would warm the bench for a more aggressive Alidu Seidu or the experienced Denis Odoi to replace him.
Possible lineup: Lawrence Ati-Zigi; Gideon Mensah/Baba Rahman; Mohammad Salisu; Daniel Amartey, Tariq/Odoi/Alidu; Thomas Partey; Abdul Salis; Jordan Ayew; Andre Ayew; Kudus Mohammed; Inaki Williams.
