The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, with a number of candidates affected by cancellations and withheld results following investigations into examination irregularities.
In a statement signed by John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the Council said its 36th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee, held on Friday, August 15, 2025, approved the following actions:
• 718 candidates had their subject results cancelled.
• 177 candidates had their entire results cancelled.
• 1,240 candidates had their subject results withheld.
• 93 candidates had their entire results withheld.
Additionally, subject results of candidates from 119 schools have been cancelled, while those of candidates from 87 schools remain withheld for further scrutiny. WAEC noted that the outcome of the investigations, expected by September 6, 2025, will determine whether the withheld results are eventually cancelled or released.
What Affected Candidates Should Do
WAEC has directed candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld to visit https://irreg.waec.org or click on the “withheld/cancelled” button on the WAEC results portal home page.
On the “Irregularity and Investigations” page, candidates will be able to see the reasons for the action taken against their results. Those with withheld results will also receive instructions on the next steps.
Heads of schools and proprietors can also log in using their results listing credentials to check the status of candidates whose results have been withheld.
Caution Against Fraudsters
WAEC further cautioned candidates, parents, and the general public against fraudsters who claim they can upgrade results for a fee. The Council stressed that all results are secure, authentic, and can be verified.
