Gospel music group Alabaster Box has taken Ghanaian rapper Medikal to court, accusing him of copyright infringement for allegedly sampling their hit song “Akwaaba” in his track “Welcome to Africa.”
The group is demanding GH₵15 million in damages, claiming Medikal’s song contains offensive content that has hurt their reputation.
After several failed attempts to serve him in person, the High Court in Accra has now approved a substituted service. This means legal documents can now be delivered to Medikal through: His verified social media handles (Facebook, Instagram & X), His manager’s WhatsApp, And the High Court notice board
According to Alabaster Box, the first 10 seconds of Medikal’s song directly copy their work. They’re asking the court not only for financial compensation but also to: Take the song down from all streaming platforms, Demand an account of any profits made from the song.
The case is heating up, and it’s one of the biggest copyright battles in Ghana’s music industry so far.
