GES Shuts Down Three SHSs After Violent Attacks Leave Students Dead and Injured
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the temporary closure of three Senior High Schools—Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS—following violent incidents that have resulted in the tragic deaths of students, injuries, and serious damage to school property.
The attacks, which occurred between 20th and 26th July 2025, have disrupted academic activities and created fear and trauma among students, staff, and their families. The GES, in a statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, condemned the violence in strong terms and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and affected school communities.
To ensure the safety of students and school personnel, the GES has temporarily closed the affected campuses. The Service is working closely with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and other key stakeholders to make special examination arrangements for SHS 3 students scheduled to write the WASSCE. For SHS 1 and 2 students, remote learning and alternative interventions are being explored. Counselling support has also been scaled up to help students and staff cope with the trauma. The GES thanked the government and security agencies for swiftly evacuating students and assured the public of its commitment to restoring safety and academic continuity.
