Auditor-General Uncovers Wrongful Transport Allowance Payment to Donkorkrom Teacher

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the recovery of GH₵17,700 wrongfully paid to a teacher in Donkorkrom, Kwahu Afram Plains North, as a transport allowance meant for physically challenged staff.

According to the Auditor-General’s current report, Mr. Stephen Akomeah, a teacher at Donkorkrom, received the allowance over a three-year period, despite not having any form of disability. The allowance was specifically designed to support physically challenged teachers with their mobility and transportation needs.

At a PAC sitting held on Friday, August 22, 2025, officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES) were questioned over the irregular payment. The Committee, dissatisfied with the explanation provided, ordered that the entire amount be refunded within 30 days into the Auditor-General’s recoveries account.

Additionally, the PAC instructed the District Director of Education for Kwahu Afram Plains North to supervise the repayment. Failure to ensure the refund will result in the Director being held personally liable to settle the amount.

The Committee reiterated its stance that public funds must be protected and any wrongful payments promptly recovered.
