Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination Begins with 37,000 Applicants Nationwide

Accra, July 18, 2025 — The Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) commenced today across the country, with over 37,000 applicants participating in the crucial assessment aimed at standardizing entry into the teaching profession.

At the Accra High School examination centre, the Honourable Minister of Education paid a working visit to monitor the smooth conduct of the exams. He commended the National Teaching Council (NTC) and invigilators for maintaining order and ensuring fairness in the process.

Out of the total number of candidates, 5,000 are re-sitters — individuals retaking the exam — while the remaining 32,000 are first-time applicants, many of whom are recent graduates from various Colleges of Education. Today’s paper, which began promptly in the morning, is scheduled to last two hours.

In a significant policy shift, the government, through the NTC, has announced that this will be the final standalone teacher licensure examination. Moving forward, the licensure exam will be integrated into final-year assessments for teacher trainees. This measure is intended to streamline the certification process and reduce the burden on graduates, while maintaining the standards required for entry into the profession.

The new reforms are part of broader efforts to enhance teacher education and professional development in Ghana.

The NTC has assured the public of the integrity of the exams and promised the timely release of results.
