Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that kindergarten to junior high school pupils will study coding, artificial intelligence (AI), electronics and civic ethics under a revised basic school curriculum.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 20, 2026, he said the new “Smart Start Curriculum,” developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), aims to strengthen science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education while promoting ethical values and civic responsibility.

Mr Iddrisu said the reform is part of the government’s efforts to improve basic education, noting that literacy, numeracy and critical thinking are built at that level. However, he did not state when the new curriculum would begin or how teachers would be trained to teach the new subjects.
