Ghana, July 8, SIXSCRIBES – Former Speaker of Parliament, Aaron Mike Oquaye has beseeched film makers and movie directors in Ghana to come out with creative Ghanaian movies rather than dubbing voiceovers for European and Asian movies for the consumption of Ghanaians.
Telecasting foreign movies in local voices have been the practice of many TV station which is gradually shifting attention away from locally produced movies. To the former Speaker of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, this has been one of the main problems fighting the growth of the movie industry in Ghana.
He said, “I cannot help adding one matter. I beg our actors and scriptwriters to come out with Ghanaian films. I get sick anytime I hear Twi words or Ga words pushed through some European or Asian lips. The practice should be stopped if we should develop as a people.
Professor Mike Ocquaye added that such practices cannot happen in the countries of origin of these movies and telenovelas.
“These are the things that unmake a nation. It can never happen in Malaysia. It can never happen in India. It can never happen in any of the Asian tiger countries,” – he added.
The politician made this statement at the inaugural memorial lecture of Okyenhene Ba Dr. Jones Akwasi Amoako Atta Ofori-Atta at the University of Ghana.
