Teacher unions in Ghana have suspended their two-week strike following a meeting with the Council of State on Friday, October 9, 2026.
The unions have directed their members to return to the classrooms on Monday, October 12, 2026, after reaching an agreement with the government on outstanding salary payments and other conditions of service.
The strike was triggered by concerns over delayed salary adjustments for promoted teachers and the implementation of agreed conditions of service. The industrial action disrupted teaching and learning in public pre-tertiary schools as teachers demanded that the government address their concerns.
Before the suspension, the government had engaged the unions in efforts to resolve the dispute. The latest meeting with the Council of State has resulted in an agreement on how the outstanding payments and other commitments will be implemented.
Speaking after the agreement, the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr George Smith-Graham, said both parties had reached a consensus and signed the agreed modalities.
Under the agreement, about 52,000 promoted teachers are expected to receive their salary arrears, including the necessary adjustments, on October 16, 2026.
The remaining promoted teachers are expected to receive their adjusted salaries by the end of October.
Dr Smith-Graham also announced that payments under the collective agreement would take effect from January 2027.
The agreement further includes new allowances for teachers, although details of the allowances have not yet been made public.
The suspension of the strike is expected to allow teaching and learning to resume in public schools while the government works to fulfil its commitments under the agreement.
Teachers will now be looking forward to the promised payments and the implementation of the agreed conditions of service.
