The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has declared an indefinite strike effective Thursday, October 1, 2026, over unpaid post-retirement contracts and concerns about changes to its Scheme of Service.
The decision was reached at the TUTAG Congress held on September 24, 2026, following what the Association described as months of unsuccessful engagements with government agencies.
TUTAG National President, Prof. Deodat E. Adenutsi, said some members working under post-retirement contracts have not been paid for more than 27 months despite continuing to work.
According to the Association, meetings and correspondence with the Ministries of Education and Finance, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the National Labour Commission have not produced a solution.
TUTAG is demanding the immediate payment of all verified arrears and a clear payment schedule, including payments due to deceased members through their lawful representatives.
The Association is also protesting what it describes as the unilateral variation of the agreed 2021 Scheme of Service, particularly issues concerning academic librarians and the promotion requirements for Assistant Lecturers and Assistant Research Fellows.
Under the strike, TUTAG members will stop teaching, supervising students’ research and submitting examination marks until further notice.
However, members will continue with other professional duties, including attending meetings, serving on boards and committees, conducting research and undertaking community service.
TUTAG said it regrets the disruption the strike may cause students and university communities but maintained that the action is necessary to push for the resolution of its concerns.
