The Ministry of Education has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of three students following a shooting incident in the Oti Region, linked to a renewed outbreak of tribal conflict in the area.
The incident claimed the lives of two female students of Nkwanta Senior High School on Thursday 26th June, 2025, followed by the death of a male student on Friday 27th June, who was struck by a stray bullet.
In a statement issued by the Ministry, officials described the loss as heartbreaking and extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the student body, staff of Nkwanta SHS, and all those affected by the violence.
“The Ministry of Education is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of these young lives. We stand with the bereaved families and the entire school community during this painful time,” the statement read.
The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has praised the swift response of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the region, particularly their decision to temporarily close down Nkwanta SHS as a precautionary measure to protect students and staff.
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to the safety of students and called for a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict, stating that the return to a secure learning environment remains a top priority.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as efforts are intensified to restore calm and ensure the protection of all affected communities.
