Trotro Mate Touts Job as Better Alternative to Teaching
In a surprising endorsement of the bus conducting profession, commonly known as “trotro mate,” one advocate has suggested that it could offer better financial prospects than teaching, urging the unemployed to consider joining the ranks.
Speaking exclusively to Akoma FM, the advocate, whose identity remains undisclosed, passionately advocated for trotro conducting as a viable career option. He emphasized the importance of being able to handle money and communicate effectively, skills crucial for the role. “If you’re unemployed and can manage money while speaking persuasively, being a trotro conductor can be very lucrative,” he remarked in Akan.
Highlighting the practical benefits of the job, he pointed out, “When you work, you have access to meals and water, and at the end of the day, transportation home is never an issue.” Drawing from personal experience, he shared, “In my case, whenever I go to Atonsu, any driver is willing to pick me up because they know having a helpful mate is invaluable.”
The advocacy comes at a time when unemployment remains a pressing issue in Ghana, prompting unconventional career paths to gain attention as viable alternatives. With its potential for immediate income and job availability, the trotro mate role may indeed offer a pragmatic option for those exploring different avenues in the job market.
It is highly shameful to compare the teaching profession in Ghana to trotro mate business but the advocate might not be far from right considering the work and welfare conditions of teachers in the country.
