The University of Ghana has unveiled its newest venture: the Kumasi City Campus. This initiative aims to cater for students who previously faced barriers to entry at the main campus, offering them enhanced educational opportunities.
Coinciding with this launch was the inaugural matriculation ceremony, welcoming 26 undergraduate students for the 2023-2024 academic year. This campus, established as part of the College of Education, has received full accreditation to deliver Bachelor of Science in Business Administration programs.
Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, emphasized the institution’s commitment to extending its reach beyond the capital. The creation of city campuses across different regions aligns with this vision, ensuring manageable student numbers and fostering an environment conducive to quality education.
Prof. Amfo acknowledged the limitations faced at the Legon campus due to insufficient facilities, which resulted in the rejection of numerous qualified applicants. She urged prospective students to explore the programs offered at the city campuses, enhancing their chances of admission to the esteemed university.
Highlighting the university’s affirmative action policy, Prof. Amfo revealed that 56.6% of the admitted students were female, reaffirming their dedication to gender equality in education. The commitment extends to creating a supportive environment for all students, regardless of gender, to thrive academically and professionally.
Despite the celebration, challenges such as accommodation constraints were acknowledged. Tracy Afi Agossa, a representative of the matriculating class, voiced concerns about the financial burden of commuting to campus daily. She appealed to university management to prioritize the construction of hostels to alleviate this pressure and enhance the overall student experience.
Acting Principal Prof. Edward Nketiah-Amponsah urged students to embrace their journey with open minds, fostering networks that would provide mentorship and career opportunities. He emphasized the importance of critical thinking and diversity, traits essential for success in today’s global landscape.
Looking ahead, the University of Ghana is poised to transform its city campuses into hubs of excellence, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and services. With a dedicated team and unwavering commitment, these campuses are set to empower students and contribute to national development through education.
