The University of Ghana has announced the postponement of the start of its 2024/2025 academic year due to ongoing strike actions by several employee unions. The strikes, which began on Monday, September 16, 2024, have disrupted campus activities as unions demand the fulfillment of various agreements on working conditions.
The striking groups include the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG). Their grievances are largely centered on the failure of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to implement approved vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances. These allowances had been approved by the Ministry of Finance as early as August 2024, yet they remain unimplemented.
In a statement released by university management, it was confirmed that special programs will continue as scheduled, and students will be informed of any further developments. The management assured that a new start date for the academic year will be announced once the labor disputes are resolved.
The strike has caused significant disruptions, with union members demanding the resolution of long-standing issues such as delayed pension contributions, non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowances, and the suspension of previously agreed allowances.
The indefinite strike has raised concerns over the potential impact on students and academic activities, but the university remains hopeful that a resolution will be reached soon.
