The University of Ghana has suspended a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, for two semesters due to sexual harassment.
According to a notice signed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, and dated March 12, 2025, Dr. Appiah violated the university’s Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy and the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.
As part of his punishment, Dr. Appiah must issue a formal written apology to the complainant. He is also barred from applying for a promotion for one year after his suspension ends. Additionally, he must undergo training on sexual harassment and misconduct, which will be conducted by the university’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee.
The notice also mentioned that 16 students had been sanctioned for various forms of misconduct.
The University of Ghana has urged all members of its community to familiarize themselves with the institution’s rules and to behave appropriately.
