At least five students sustained severe injuries, while several others suffered minor wounds, after violence broke out during a peace ceremony between students of Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute on Tuesday.
According to Citi FM, the event, held at Bawku Technical Institute, was organized by school authorities in collaboration with Kpalwega traditional rulers in an effort to end recurring clashes between the two schools. However, tensions escalated unexpectedly, turning the gathering into a scene of chaos.
Eyewitnesses reported that what started as a peaceful interaction quickly degenerated into a violent confrontation. Though the exact cause of the outbreak remains unclear, some sources suggest that a heated exchange between students triggered the conflict.
Security personnel had to intervene to restore order, and the injured students were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and prevent further hostilities.
The Kpalwega traditional leaders and school administrators have condemned the violence, urging students to embrace peace and unity. Meanwhile, security has been reinforced around both schools to prevent further clashes.
Despite the disruption, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) went ahead with the ceremony, successfully concluding it with the participation of the senior prefects from both schools.
Local officials have vowed to continue engaging stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the tensions between the two institutions.
