A distressing incident involving the alleged abandonment of an accident victim by the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital has stirred public outrage and raised serious questions about patient care and hospital procedures in Ghana’s Central Region.

The victim, an elderly woman suspected to suffer from dementia or a mental illness, was reportedly involved in an accident and admitted to Winneba Hospital alongside other patients. Despite her vulnerable condition, she languished at the hospital for approximately two months without any known relatives visiting or claiming her. This lack of familial contact appears to have influenced the hospital’s decision-making process regarding her care.

According to eyewitnesses and local reports, after allegedly becoming a nuisance due to nighttime disturbances, the hospital staff purportedly discharged her and arranged for transportation back to her reported hometown of Gomoa Ojobi. Shockingly, instead of ensuring she reached her destination safely, she was allegedly left by the roadside near a bush at the outskirts of Gomoa Ojobi. Photos and videos from the scene depict a heartbreaking sight: the elderly woman with casts on both legs lying beside a wheelchair, where she remained unattended for about a week.

Tragically, the woman passed away a week after being abandoned, her ordeal culminating in a lonely and undignified death at the very spot where she was left. Local residents, initially hesitant to approach her out of fear or uncertainty, eventually organized makeshift bedding to provide comfort and warmth until her demise.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability. Community leaders and concerned citizens have expressed shock and dismay, demanding a thorough investigation into the hospital’s alleged actions. Many are questioning how a medical facility entrusted with patient care could allow such a grievous oversight to occur.

In response to mounting public pressure, the hospital administration has convened a high-level meeting to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident. Dr. George Prah, the Medical Director of Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, acknowledged the gravity of the allegations and emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in handling such cases.

Local authorities, including the Odikro of Ojobi, Nana Atta Kakra, have confirmed receiving reports from community members about the incident. He expressed sorrow over the elderly woman’s plight and highlighted community efforts to support her in her final days.

As investigations proceed and public scrutiny intensifies, the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital faces a critical test of its commitment to patient welfare and adherence to medical ethics. The outcome of these inquiries will likely determine the hospital’s standing in the community and its ability to restore public trust in its healthcare services.

For now, the tragic death of the elderly accident victim serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities within healthcare systems and the imperative to uphold standards of care for all patients, regardless of their circumstances.
