The Government of Ghana has confirmed the death of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, and former Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong, following the tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter, identified as Z-9, took off from Accra at exactly 9:12 a.m. and was en route to Obuasi. It was carrying three crew members and five passengers when it went off the radar.
A statement delivered by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on behalf of the President, conveyed the nation’s grief and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unfortunate passing of our esteemed ministers and officials in today’s helicopter crash. The entire nation mourns this great loss,” the Chief of Staff said.

Emergency response teams were dispatched to the crash site shortly after the aircraft went missing. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
This tragic incident marks one of the most devastating losses to Ghana’s leadership in recent years.
