Seven invigilators have been arrested for exam malpractice on the first day of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), according to the Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council, John Kapi.
Speaking in an interview with 3news on May 4, Mr Kapi said the cases were recorded across three regions. Three incidents occurred in the Central Region, two in Bono, and two in Ashanti, bringing the total number to seven.
He explained that five of the cases involved the illegal use of mobile phones, while two invigilators were caught preparing answers to share with candidates in the exam hall. According to him, three of the individuals arrested were not actively supervising at the time, while the remaining four were directly involved as invigilators.
Mr Kapi expressed concern over the continued involvement of teachers in such misconduct despite repeated warnings. He noted that WAEC and its regional officials have held several meetings with teachers, chiefs, parents, and security agencies to discourage exam malpractice. He added that both the Director-General of WAEC and the Minister of Education have clearly stated the consequences for anyone caught engaging in such acts.
He described the situation as worrying, questioning why some teachers still choose to break the rules despite these efforts.
Despite the incidents, Mr Kapi said the exams generally started well across the country. No candidate was prevented from writing the exams. However, he mentioned delays in the delivery of exam papers in some centres, especially in parts of the Western Region.
He assured the public that such challenges are being addressed and improvements are expected as the exams continue in the coming days.
