The Ministry of Education has strongly condemned a shooting incident at Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Primary School in Yendi in the Northern Region, describing the attack as unacceptable and a serious threat to the safety of pupils and teachers.
According to preliminary reports, two armed men allegedly stormed the school premises and fired their weapons indiscriminately, causing panic among pupils and members of staff. During the incident, the headmaster of the school was reportedly assaulted and sustained injuries.
In response, the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Police Service to give immediate attention to the matter and ensure that thorough investigations are conducted to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Ministry stressed that schools are places meant for teaching, learning, and the development of children, and should never become scenes of violence. It described the use of firearms and intimidation on school premises as a grave threat to the safety and well-being of learners, teachers, and the entire educational community.
The Minister also urged members of the public to refrain from encroaching on school premises and to respect educational institutions as safe spaces.
The Ministry expressed its support for the affected pupils, staff, and the injured headmaster, wishing him a speedy recovery. It further assured parents and guardians that it would continue to work closely with security agencies to strengthen safety measures in schools across the country.
The Ministry also appealed to anyone with information that could assist investigations to cooperate with the Ghana Police Service.
The statement was issued in a letter released on 9th July, 2026 by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Minister for Education.
