Prempeh College, a prominent participant in the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ), has taken legal action by approaching the High Court seeking an injunction on the highly anticipated NSMQ grand finale.
This move comes in the wake of a heated disagreement surrounding an answer provided by a representative from Prempeh College during the semi-final round. While the school firmly asserted the accuracy of their response, the quiz master held a differing viewpoint.
Prempeh College promptly filed a petition with Primetime Limited, the organizers of the NSMQ. Regrettably, the petition was rejected, with the company expressing contentment with the rationale provided by the NSMQ consultant and the quiz mistress for their decision to withhold points from Prempeh College for the contested question.
In response, Prempeh College, through a statement released by the school’s NSMQ coordinator, PB Damoah, asserted their commitment to exhaust all available avenues in pursuit of justice.
With the NSMQ grand finale slated for October 30, 2023, Prempeh College contends that they would have continued in the competition had their answer to the disputed question not been dismissed by the quiz mistress.
The writ filed on behalf of Prempeh College by lawyer Kwame Boateng Atuahene, explicitly states, “…praying the Honourable Court for an Order of Interlocutory Injunction against Defendant/Respondent (Defendant) or its agents, assigns, workmen, and privies from organizing the Grand Finale of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz fixed for Monday 30 October 2023 at the National Theatre at 2:00 pm or any other day before or after the afore-mentioned date pending the final determination of the matter in terms of the affidavit in support.”
The school posted of their social media page that that their goal is not to seek an image for the school but to unearth the truth and defend the existence of science.
“If primetime finds it difficult to admit an error, then it becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss it. The ultimate goal is to uncover the truth. At the end of it all, it is science that wins and not Prempeh College or primetime…it’s about the science. But you cannot simply ignore the facts. While this may not have been filed by Prempeh College, it has the support of seniors,” they posted.
The injunction case is scheduled to be heard on Thursday, November 2, 2023, further intensifying the anticipation and scrutiny surrounding this legal battle within the educational community.
