Teachers at Kobedi AME Zion Primary and JHS in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region have stopped going to class indefinitely after claims that an alleged curse by a student may be linked to the deaths of the school’s headmistress and another teacher.
The headmistress, Madam Gladys Dorlo Batinge, and another teacher are reported to have died suddenly, causing fear and tension in the school and community.
The boycott started on Monday, May 18, 2026, leaving many pupils stranded. Some children were seen moving around the community during school hours instead of being in class.
When people visited the school at Kobedi near Chiraa, all the classrooms were locked, and there were no teachers or pupils on campus.
Some residents, who spoke anonymously, claimed the deaths were connected to an alleged curse said to have been placed by a student over accusations that school authorities were extorting students.
According to a community member as reported by Crime Check TV, fear surrounding local beliefs about the alleged curse has made many teachers afraid to return to school.
“We are informed that the teachers have decided to boycott classes because of what is happening in the school,” the resident said.
A teacher at the school also confirmed that staff members had agreed not to return to the classroom until the alleged curse is reversed, bringing academic activities at the school to a halt.
