Mohammed Salish’s goal against South Korea in the 2022 Qatar World Cup group H match stood despite Andre Ayew’s handball. Many soccer lovers including some Ghanaian fans had it that Ghana was favoured in that regard.
It would not had been a goal previously but according to the new FIFA rules which was clarified in 2021 at the AGM of IFAB, accidental handballs that lead to a ‘teammate’ scoring a goal will be allowed.
On the other hand, if a player scores a goal immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental, will be disallowed. So, the goal would not had counted if Andre Ayew had scored that backheel after the ball touched his hand.
After checks by VAR, it confirmed that Salisu was the kicker not Andre Ayew, hence, the goal stood for Ghana. As a result, Salisu became the first Ghana defender to ever score at a FIFA World Cup since Ghana’s debut in 2006.
