Fatal Accident Involving President’s Convoy Shakes Nation, Driver Perishes as Many Sustain Injuries

Accra, May 19, 2024 – A tragic accident along the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway has left the nation in shock. On Sunday, May 19, 2024, several vehicles from the President’s convoy were involved in the fatal incident, resulting in the loss of one life and injuries to several close protection and police officers.

The convoy was returning from Kumasi, where the President had been attending a series of events over the weekend. Mr. Kwesi Atta, one of the drivers in the convoy, tragically lost his life in the accident. Additionally, multiple officers from the President’s security detail sustained injuries of varying degrees and were promptly treated at the Suhum Government Hospital.

Efforts are underway to transfer the injured individuals to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further medical care and observation. The accident left several vehicles in the convoy completely wrecked, highlighting the severity of the collision.

Fortunately, the President emerged unharmed from the ordeal, having traveled back to Accra via military aircraft. The safety of the nation’s leader is paramount, and his well-being amidst the tragedy provides some solace during this challenging time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we extend our wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured officers,” stated a government spokesperson, Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications, Office of the President.

As investigations into the accident continue, further details will be shared with the public to provide clarity on the incident.

The nation stands united in support and understanding during this difficult period, rallying behind those affected by the tragedy.
