A Ghanaian serving in the U.S. Army, Sergeant Michael Kofi Asare, has been recognized for his outstanding service after more than a decade of dedication to the American military.
Sgt. Asare, originally from Kwahu Abetifi in the Eastern Region of Ghana, is a mechanic with the 33rd Military Police Battalion. On August 12, 2025, he was presented with a prestigious challenge coin by Chief Warrant Officer 5 Thomas Black, the State Command Chief Warrant Officer for the Illinois National Guard, during a ceremony at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.
Despite standing at an appreciable height, Sgt. Asare has defied all odds in a field where physical presence is often seen as a requirement. His recognition is a testament to his perseverance, discipline, and exceptional contribution to the battalion.
The challenge coin, a symbol of honor and respect within the U.S. military, is awarded to soldiers who demonstrate excellence, loyalty, and commitment to duty.
