Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel feels he should have won the African footballer of the year in 2013.
According to the former Supper Eagles skipper, he had achieved a lot that footballing year to be crowned the best African player but it had to slip to the Ivorian legend Yaya Toure.
“I got robbed of African Footballer award because before I went there in 2013, I was told that I won it. I was flying to Nigeria and Man City was playing. Guess what happened? Yaya scored I think two goals and he won it. I won the AFCON, Champions League and Europa League. There was no way” – John Mikel Obi spoke Dubaieye 103.8.
Mikel John Obi, also John Michael Nchekwube Obinna is a Nigerian former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder for both clubs and country. He was born on 22nd April 1987 in Jos, Nigeria where he started his career with local club Plateau United, before joining Norwegian club Lyn at the age of 17 in 2004.
Mikel last played professionally in Kuwait until July 2021 and retired on September 27, 2022.
