I was Threatened When I Invited Kudus – Kwasi Appiah Gives Details
Former Black Stars coach, James Kwesi Appiah, has detailed the cautions he received from management of the Ghana National Team when he invited young players like Kudus Mohammed, Gideon Mensah and Baba Iddrisu.
In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah, he revealed his ordeals with GFA officials and how firmly he stood to maintain the players.
According to Coach Appiah, it was the time Ghana played South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in 2019, where Ghana was in dire need of victory.
Kwesi Appiah said in the interview with Dan Kweku Yeboah:
“My first coming, I realised the likes of Essien and John Mensah were fading so I started introducing Atsu, Waris, WaKaso to replace them. We further decided to build up when I returned with others young players”
“I discovered Kudus, Baba, Ashimeru, Gideon Mensah, Joseph Paintsil…. there were people who believed the players I called did not deserve the Black Stars call-up because the were young”
He added: “But for me, I had watched them and I believed them. I always told the players not to impress me but to Ghanaians what they are capable of.
“My job was on the line because I was warned that if I lose the match I will be sacked. I took the risk because I knew I was employing what was good for the country.”
Kudus Mohammed scored in that game to help Ghana win 2-0 against South Africa in 2019.
